2026 Rule Changes Confirmed: What You Need to Know

The FIA has officially ratified the 2026 technical regulations. Here is a breakdown of the key changes to the power unit and aerodynamics.

The FIA has officially ratified the 2026 technical regulations, marking one of the biggest shifts in the sport's history. These rules are designed to make the cars smaller, lighter, and more sustainable, while introducing a radical new way of racing.

The "Nimble Car" Concept

After years of complaints that F1 cars had become too heavy and "boat-like," the 2026 regulations aim to reverse the trend.

  • Width: Reduced from 2000mm to 1900mm.
  • Wheelbase: Shortened by 20cm to 3400mm.
  • Weight: A target reduction of 30kg, bringing the minimum weight down to 768kg.

  • The 50/50 Power Unit

The engine formula is staying as a V6 Turbo Hybrid, but the internal balance is changing completely.

  • MGU-H Removed: The complex and expensive heat recovery system has been scrapped to attract new manufacturers like Audi.
  • Electric Power Tripled: The electrical output (MGU-K) increases from 120kW to 350kW (470bhp).
  • The Split: The power unit now delivers roughly 50% of its power from the internal combustion engine and 50% from the electric motor.

  • Active Aerodynamics

For the first time, F1 cars will have movable wings on both the front and rear.

  • Z-Mode (High Downforce): The standard mode for cornering, where wings are angled steeply for grip.
  • X-Mode (Low Drag): A driver-activated mode for straights where flaps flatten out to reduce drag and increase top speed.

  • This system replaces the traditional DRS, meaning *all* drivers can reduce drag on straights to save energy, not just those following another car.
